1. Local is best & organic when possible: It is very important to buy at least the “dirty dozen” organic. This reduces the amount of pesticides and herbicides you may be ingesting. The dirty dozen is a list published by ewg.org every year after testing produce. They also have a clean-15 list of the cleanest produce available. At the top of the list for 2015 was avocado and pineapple, two crops we have an abundance of in Hawai'i. Always wash produce before consumption. Buying foods that are grown locally helps support local farmers and keeps your dollar in the local community.
2. Emphasis on food made from scratch: By focusing on whole foods and eating foods made from scratch you can directly control how much salt, sugar, oil, flavorings, and additives are going into your body. The foods you eat will be fresher, less processed and possibly save a little money on the way.
3. No artificial colors or flavorings: There is research coming out now showing a correlation between diet and behavior, in children as well as adults. There have also been studies published that show links between food additives (colors) that could enhance autism symptoms and flare ups.
4. 80-20 -20 Rule: Eat well 80 % of the week, and 20% of the time you have a little room to indulge. Engaging in exercise for at least 20 minutes a day will keep your body feeling good and helps to clear the mind.
